Our Mission, Mandate and Values.

Mission Statement

To play our part as an independent national body in an impartial, efficient and open manner, to ensure that physical development and major infrastructure projects in Ireland respect the principles of sustainable development, including the protection of the environment.


Mandate

An Coimisiún Pleanála was formally established on June 18th, 2025, under Part 17 of the Planning and Development Act 2024, formerly An Bord Pleanála, which had been established in 1977 under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1976. 

The areas it is responsible for include the determination of planning appeals including Large Scale Residential development (LRD) and direct applications for Strategic Infrastructure and Marine projects. It is also responsible for dealing with proposals for the compulsory acquisition of land by local authorities and others under various enactments. An Coimisiún Pleanála also has functions to determine appeals under Water Pollution Acts and the Building Control Acts.
