Mission Statement

To play our part as an independent national body in an impartial, efficient and open manner, to ensure that physical development and major infrastructure projects in Ireland respect the principles of sustainable development, including the protection of the environment.
 

Mandate

In seeking to fulfil its mission and mandate An Bord Pleanála will be guided by the following core organisational values:

An Bord Pleanála was established in 1977 under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1976 and is responsible for the determination of appeals and and applications for Strategic Infrastructure and Housing Developments. It is also responsible for dealing with proposals for the compulsory acquisition of land by local authorities and others under various enactments. An Bord Pleanála also has functions to determine appeals under Water Pollution Acts and the Building Control Acts.
