Mick Long was appointed interim Board member on the 3rd of January 2023 for a one year term, an extension to the term had been granted to the 2nd of January 2025. On the 6th of November 2024 he was appointed an ordinary Board member from the 2nd of September 2024 to the 1st of September 2029. 
In accordance with section 495(5) of the Planning and Development Act 2024, any Board member of An Bord Pleanála in office immediately before the date of commencement of this section of the Act on 17 June 2025, shall on and from this date, continue in office as an ordinary planning commissioner of An Coimisiún Pleanála, in accordance with the terms and conditions of his or her appointment, as in force immediately before that date, under the Planning and Development Act 2000.
Mick has a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from UCD and has an Advanced Diploma in Planning and Environmental Law from Kings Inn. He started his career in the Property Registration Authority and subsequently worked for 26 years in the Office of the Public Works (OPW).
He was the Chief Financial Officer in the OPW for 9 years before being appointed as the Head of Corporate Services at Director level on the OPW Management Board in 2018 with additional responsibility for Strategy Development, Corporate Governance and Risk.
Mick completed the executive leadership programme at Harvard Business School in 2009 and has earlier this year received a Diploma and Certificate (distinction) in Company Direction with the Institute of Directors in Ireland. He was conferred with Chartered Director status from the Institute of Directors, London, in 2023.
